The artist, Dave Koenig,  envisaged a vintage carnival-themed deck of  poker playing cards. 

This deck of cards has an antiquity and haunting aspect, with an old traveling carnival theme. 

The artist was able to include some of the twisted tails freak shows had to offer in the mid-1800s, 

from lion tamers to bearded queens, to snake charmers and scantily dressed contortionists.
 
The intricate detail of every face card tells a story. Between devil whispers, fortune-telling, and blowing fire,
